Damini Celebre
Mother Trees are the largest and oldest trees in a forest that share carbon and nutrients with other trees and seedlings through a fungal network. My bond with nature runs deep. Over the past three decades, I have nurtured this relationship, and it has profoundly shaped my creative practice. As a shamanic practitioner, I perceive a world where everything is alive and has Spirit. Translating this energetic aliveness and interconnection serves as the foundation of my work. As an artist-intermediary, I am passionate about using art to deepen our connection with Nature.
I refer to my art-making practice as a Conversation with Land, where "Land" represents all of Nature. My process begins with a walk, during which I pay close attention to what calls to me. Once I identify who I am co-creating with, I sit on the ground and enter a deep meditative state, using recordings and sketches to allow that Being’s energy to guide my artistic process.
Once I am in the studio, I immerse myself in the recordings and sketches I gathered on-site to invoke that felt sense connection. My process is similar to a living dialogue; the artwork undergoes a series of transformative visual interactions. Memories surface, get covered over, impressions arise, and gems are unearthed. The multiple layers often seen in my work symbolize how we experience our shared energetic connection with the Land, whether as a long-lost memory or a physical sensation.
I’m asking Land to reveal its true energetic self, beyond our labels of "tree," "water," “weed". While these labels create a common language, they can also limit our curiosity and confine Nature's aliveness.
In recent years, I have explored the interconnectivity of Trees and how they function as a cohesive unit rather than as individual entities. In particular, I have focused on Mother Trees and how they communicate through their root systems and the mycelium network to support the flourishing of their community. This benefits not just themselves, but the entire ecosystem around them. This interconnectedness serves as a powerful reminder that, as humans, we are part of a larger community and that our actions have a ripple effect on the world around us.
